5 Into 1 + 1
Curated by Joseph DiGiuseppe and Chris Golas in partnership with the Philadelphia Sculptors Society
Philadelphia Sculptors is proud to present "5 into 1 + 1", in cooperation with Moore College of Art and Design. This is the ninth year for the annual student exhibition that showcases sculpture by outstanding senior and graduate students from Philadelphia area colleges. In a change from past shows, this exhibition will be divided into two parts. Moore College of Art and Design will host the primary exhibition, with the opening reception on Saturday, May 31, 2008 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. A second related exhibition of student work will take place at FLUXspace in Kensington, with an opening reception scheduled for Friday, May 30, 2008 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Both shows will run from May 31 – June 15, 2008.
The exhibition is curated by recent graduates of Tyler School of Art, Joe DiGiuseppe and Chris Golas. Past "5 into 1" exhibitions have featured creative contributions from Moore College of Art & Design, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Tyler School of Art, University of Pennsylvania, and The University of the Arts. In a second break with tradition, this year's curators have added new talent (the "+1") from a sixth school, Arcadia University. The Arcadia artists are Katie Popelak, Dan Galloway and Julie McConnell. Moore is represented by Samantha Hill; PAFA by Ted Sare, Gregory Scott, Robert Scobey, and Tina Zavitsanos; Tyler by Brian Goodhart; The University of the Arts by Adam Bush, Max Hartley, and Nicholas Poyner; and the University of Pennsylvania by Kurt Freyer.
Moore College of Art & Design is located at 20th Street and the Ben Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, PA 19103. The Wilson Gallery hours during the exhibition will be Monday – Sunday 10am – 6pm.
The opening events for this location will be held in the Wilson Gallery Saturday, May 31. An opening presentation at 1:30 p.m by Penny Balkin Bach, Executive Director of the Fairmount Park Art Association, will precede the reception. In addition, Thomas Zummer, Scholar, Writer, Artist and Curator, will present a synopsis of the exhibition at 3:30 p.m. The best in show will be chosen by Stamatina Gregory, newest curatorial fellow at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia.
FLUXspace Gallery is located at 3000 North Hope Street, Philadelphia, PA. The exhibition will be open Saturdays 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. and by appointment. Contact FLUXspace (610) 764-7488 or visit the Gallery website at http://www.thefluxspace.org.
