FLUXspace, usually a venue for exciting and risk taking visual art work, will put itself in flux as a practice, performance, and movement space during DANCEmonth, with performances, dance classes, movie screenings, and other dance related activities scheduled throughout the month of February.
Wednesday Night Programming
The ever-popular free and fun WNP (Wednesday Night Programming) at FLUXspace will continue during DANCEmonth featuring a range of activities including lectures, movie screenings, and a potluck. FLUXluck, our monthly Pot Luck, scheduled on February 4 at 7:30 pm, will provide a casual atmosphere to enjoy a shared meal and will also feature a rehearsal for a FLUX staff-initiated dance piece to be performed at the first FLUXspace FUNDraiser later in the month. Movie Night/Rize on February 11 at 8:30 pm is a screening of David LaChappelle’s acclaimed 2005 film RIZE. Movie Night/Dance Shorts on February 25 at 8:30 pm will feature an array of movie shorts featuring dance, selected from a variety of sources including: Youtube, personal archives, PBS, and beyond. Wednesday Night Programming will also include a lecture by Joanna Quigley, Philadelphia-based dancer, member of Club Lifestyle and founder of the dance company Out-going Dance Theater. Following Joanna’s presentation on February 18 at 7:30pm, Out-going Dance Theater will present an informal showing of works-in-progress from its current repertoire. As always, beer and light refreshments will be provided at each Wednesday Night Program.
Performances & Special Events
During February, FLUXspace is excited to be hosting two evenings of performances featuring works by a number of noteworthy Philadelphia and NYC based choreographers, and its first-ever fundraiser.
On Friday, February 13 at 7 pm, FLUXspace in collaboration with MAP Dance Collective presents Freddie Hearts Jason, a performance night of dances-in-progress featuring: Lea Fulton (NYC), Jen McGinn (Phila, PA), Daniele Paloumpis (Phila, PA), Ryan Ross (NYC), and Christina Zani (Phila, PA), and guest of honor Jung-eun Kim aka Je (Wonderin’ Woman). Come see these fearless acts of love not on Valentines Day.
FLUXspace is pleased to announce that as of January 2009, FLUXspace is a fully-fledged 501(c)3 non-profit organization! To celebrate this momentous news and to help raise much-needed funds to support FLUXspace’s exhibition series and programs, FLUXspace will hosts its first fundraiser on Febuary 19 at 8:00 pm at local bar and music venue, Kung Fu Necktie. FLUXspace FUNDraiser will feature musical performances by Whales & Cops (ex-Man Man), Gemini Wolf, and DJ KT, as well as FLUXstaff dance routines, all for a small donation of $10!
On February 28th at 7:30 pm, DANCEmonth waves its final bon voyage with Dance Pants Recital 2K9, a night of performers and performances we adore. Check the FLUXspace website to view the final lineup for this jam-packed evening featuring works by a diverse range of emerging local dancers and choreographers.
Studio/Rehearsal Space
Throughout the month of February, the FLUXspace gallery is available—at no charge—to dancers and choreographers to use as a rehearsal space. The gallery features clean, hardwood floors and mirrors. To schedule studio time, please check the current schedule of events and classes at www.thefluxspace.org, and call 484-201-1903 or 914-806-4889 to request and confirm available slots. Make new work and perform it, all at FLUX!
Classes
DANCEmonth will also feature Saturday evening classes (5 – 7 pm) with Philadelphia-based dancer and choreographer Joanna Quigley; her classes at FLUX will include: Beginner Ballet (2/14), Beginner Modern Jazz (2/21), and Beginner Hip-Hop (2/28). All classes are FREE and OPEN to any level dancer! In addition, each Wednesday afternoon FLUXspace will offer a beginner dance class for visiting Hunter Elementary School students. Every week a 3rd grade class will take a field trip to FLUXspace and will learn basic dance technique and movement with FLUX Program Coordinator, Susanna Gieske.
Best Regards,
